As a training center and mental health organization, founded close to two decades ago, our mission has had three areas of focus:
- To provide access to affordable therapy services to clients of diverse abilities, cultures, genders, religions, sexual orientations, socio-economic levels and documentation statuses
- To provide Narrative Therapy training, supervision and support for marriage and family therapists
- To conduct research to promote and expand upon mental health principles and practices which contribute to individual and community wellbeing, both locally and globally.
We believe that the theoretical principles and practices of Narrative Therapy could contribute to a relational revolution. As therapists with a background in postmodern and poststructural ideas, we are trained to question the status quo and the “taken for granted” assumptions about how the world should operate. We recognize that the structures that organize our society are socially-constructed and are influenced by power and privilege, as well as the cultural, political and social norms at any given time.
Among the core values of our community of students, therapists and supervisors are to support and strive towards inclusivity and anti-discriminatory practices. As Narrative therapists, we recognize that therapy is a political act and that we can wield great influence in our clients’ lives. We have a responsibility to advocate for our clients in support of greater equity, equality and access. Narrative therapy is based on principles and practices that guide our social justice work. These include but are not limited to:
- Remaining curious about the ideas that inform us and that have implications for our work and our relationships.
- Acknowledging that power is present in every interaction and our role includes managing power dynamics both inside and outside the therapy room.
- Viewing people as being in relationship to problems versus being problematic themselves.
- Viewing problems as arising from contextual factors such as the unjust structures and dominant discourses that shape and constrain our society.
- Positioning our clients as the experts in their own lives and as privileged authors of their stories.
- Positioning the therapist as de-centered yet influential, by centering client voices and staying close to their experiences.
We are committed to reducing the stigma around mental health concerns and to increasing access to therapy by offering low-cost therapy at different rates with practitioners of diverse experience levels and backgrounds. Our practice community includes therapists and supervisors of varied backgrounds and we intentionally seek to train therapists and supervisors who represent the diversity of the populations we serve.
Our values in favor of inclusivity and anti-discriminatory practices remain central to our mission and we remain committed to an active, anti-racism approach that stands against oppressive attitudes, injustices and violence. Historic past and present socio-political events, such as the global Black Lives Matter movement, demand that we remain in ongoing reflection about how we might be more intentional and explicit about our values, relational ethics and actions. In addition to the many actions we as individuals continue to take to promote justice both inside and outside the therapy room, we are committed to continued collaboration with other organizations, academic institutions and Narrative communities to embody our values and work towards dismantling social injustices.
